English navigator and hydrographer.
Newfoundland, Canada (1757-1767): Master aboard Pembroke 1757-1759 where he became acquainted with surveyor Samuel Holland. Undertook a survey of Gaspé Bay and harbour at Louisburg. Compiled charts of and re-buoyed the St. Lawrence River in preparation for British attack on Quebec in 1759. Later years transferred to the Northumberland and Grenville from which Cook charted the St Lawrence, the coast of Novia Scotia, and Newfoundland (publishing four charts in total).
Circumnavigation, Eastern Australia, Pacific (1768-1771): With rank of Lieutenant, commanded an expedition to the Pacific to observe the transit of Venus (1769, Tahiti) and find new discoveries. Captain of Endeavour. Reached east coast of New Zealand’s North Island on 7.10.1769. Spent six months charting both islands. Sighted east coast of Australia at Point Hicks 19.4.1770 – the first reported sighting of the south-eastern coast of Australia. Landed at Botany Bay 28.4.1770, discovered Port Jackson and took possession of the region giving it the name New South Wales. Followed and charted the coast north before returning home via Batavia. Circumnavigation, Pacific, Southern Ocean (1772-1775): With rank of Commander, commanded an expedition to discover the “Great South Land”. Captain of Resolution with TOBIAS FURNEAUX Captain of Adventure. First recorded crossing of the Antarctic Circle. Discovered New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, South Sandwich Islands, amongst others. North America, North West Passage, Hawaii, Pacific (1776-1779): Promoted to rank of post-Captain, appointed to a captain in Greenwich Hospital, a member of the Royal Society, and awarded Copley gold medal. Commanded an expedition to settle the question of the existence of the North West passage. Captain of Resolution with Charles CLERKE Captain of Discovery. Charted and named Kerguelen Island. Discovered Cook Islands and Raratonga, Christmas Island, Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), amongst others. Charted and explored northwest coast of North America. Killed by the natives of Hawaii 14.2.1779.
