English naturalist, botanist and traveller.
Circumnavigation, Eastern Australia, Pacific (1768-1771): Accompanied JAMES COOK on his first voyage of exploration aboard the Endeavour. BANKS fitted out the expedition at his own expense.
BANKS was the inspiration behind many other British voyages such as the breadfruit voyages of WILLIAM BLIGH, the “First Fleet” of ARTHUR PHILLIP to New South Wales, the North Pacific coastal surveys of GEORGE VANCOUVER, and the coastal surveys of Australia by MATTHEW FLINDERS. BANKS was elected to the Royal Society in 1766, founded the Linnaean Society of London in 1788, and managed the published account of JAMES COOK’s third voyage.
