English naval officer.

Circumnavigation, Tahiti (1766-1768):  Second lieutenant on the Dolphin under Captain SAMUEL WALLIS on a voyage of discovery around the world.

Circumnavigation, Tasmania (1772-1774): As Commander, captained the Adventure on the second voyage of JAMES COOK.  While separated from COOK in fog, reached the coast of Tasmania on 11.3.1773.  Produced the first reliable chart of the southern and eastern parts of Tasmania.  Discovered the Furneaux Islands (named as such by COOK on his third voyage).  Reunited with COOK in Queen Charlotte Sound (New Zealand) undertaking a tour of the Pacific.  Separated again from COOK in October 1773.  After many of his crew were killed by Maoris was forced to return to England without COOK, arriving at Spithead on 17.7.1774.  Thus credited with being the first captain to circumnavigate the globe from west to east.  Also brought back the first South Sea Islander to England, the man called Omai of Ulaitea.
