To explore means to travel extensively through (a country etc.) in order to learn and discover about it. To effect exploration requires a person: the explorer, who risks great dangers and endures extreme hardships in their search for knowledge of the world’s unexplored regions. Most collectables relating to exploration are issued to honour the explorer – their birth, death, as well as their many feats and accomplishments.
Given this fact, this site chronicles collectables by World Explorer, indexed alphabetically by the surname or family name (other than Norse navigators who are indexed by their forename). Important travellers (eg. scientists, artists) are also listed.
You can find any explorer on this site by searching through the alphabetic index, or by using the search function either on this page or on the main menu. Explorers with a date listed after their name (their birth and death) have a short biography on their individual page. Those without dates are yet to have their biography loaded. Once at the individual explorer’s page, a Table of Listings will be visible for those explorers who have collectables currently loaded. If no Table appears, it means that no collectables have yet been loaded for that explorer.
The Table of Listings has the name of the set or series listed first, followed by a thumb of the illustration, date of issue, country of issue, catalogue number (if relevant), the collectable Type, publisher, and further details regarding the listing. A separate SEARCH functionality is available for each explorer, enabling the user to search on any of the fields in the Table (other than Details). The user can also choose the primary sort key for the listings by clicking on one of the downward arrows at the top of the Table header. The default sort field is Date. The user can also export or print the listings. For ease of use, by placing the cursor over the Type code, the full description for that code will be revealed.
Finally, and most importantly, by clicking on either the set title or the thumb, a window will pop up with a larger-sized illustration as well as the full details of the particular listing. Enjoy!
